Why Protein Matters At Every Age, especially through midlife.

Protein isn't just for athletes. It's one of the foundations of healthy ageing.

Protein seems to be everywhere at the moment.

High-protein yoghurts, protein powders, bars, drinks — and plenty of conflicting advice about how much we actually need.

But protein isn't a new health trend, and it certainly isn't only important if you're trying to build muscle.

We need protein throughout life. It provides amino acids that the body uses to build and repair tissues and supports muscle, bones, enzymes, hormones and immune function.

What changes as we get older is how important it becomes to make sure we're getting enough.

Why protein deserves more attention in midlife

From our 40s and 50s onwards, maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important.

We naturally begin to lose muscle mass as we age, and hormonal changes through perimenopause and menopause can add another layer to changes in body composition, bone health and metabolic health.

This is where adequate protein — together with regular resistance or strength-based exercise — becomes particularly valuable.

The aim isn't necessarily to build large amounts of muscle.

It's to preserve strength and lean muscle so we can continue doing the things we want to do as we get older.

Muscle matters for much more than appearance. It supports mobility, balance, metabolic health and our ability to remain strong and independent later in life.

Protein matters for your bones too

We tend to associate bone health primarily with calcium and vitamin D, but protein is also an important part of the picture.

Bone is living tissue, and protein contributes to its structure as well as supporting the muscle strength that helps protect us from falls and fractures.

This becomes increasingly relevant through perimenopause, menopause and beyond, when preserving both bone and muscle deserves more attention.

Protein can help with appetite and energy

Protein also makes meals more satisfying.

If breakfast or lunch is mostly carbohydrate with very little protein, you may find yourself hungry again relatively quickly or reaching for something else not long afterwards.

Adding a meaningful source of protein can help with satiety and can be useful as part of a balanced approach to blood-sugar regulation.

That doesn't mean carbohydrates are the problem.

It's about building a balanced meal rather than focusing on one nutrient in isolation.

Are you actually eating enough?

This is where things get interesting.

Many people would say they eat protein because they have chicken, fish or meat with dinner.

But when we look at the entire day, breakfast might be toast or cereal, lunch might be a light salad, and most of the day's protein arrives in one meal at night.

Rather than concentrating almost everything at dinner, I generally prefer to see protein distributed across the day.

A useful starting point for many people is to think about including a meaningful protein source at each main meal.

For some people, around 20–30 grams of protein per meal can be a practical way to think about this, although individual requirements vary.

Your needs depend on factors including your age, body size, activity level, health, appetite and life stage.

What does that look like in real food?

You don't need to live on chicken breast or drink protein shakes all day.

Protein can come from both animal and plant foods.

Eggs, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, fish, chicken, lean meat and other dairy foods can contribute significant amounts.

Plant sources include lentils, beans, chickpeas, tofu, tempeh, nuts, seeds and whole grains.

For people eating predominantly plant-based diets, it can simply take a little more planning to make sure overall protein intake is adequate.

Protein powders can also be useful in some situations — particularly when appetite is low, requirements are higher or getting enough through food is difficult — but they aren't essential for everyone.

Food still comes first.

Protein needs change across life

Protein matters at every age, but the reason we're thinking about it can shift.

In our younger years, it supports growth, repair, activity and general health.

Through our 40s and 50s, preserving muscle, supporting bone health and maintaining metabolic health become increasingly important.

And as we move into our 60s and beyond, maintaining muscle and strength becomes closely linked with mobility, balance and independence.

That's why I prefer to think about protein as part of a long-term healthy ageing strategy rather than something we suddenly need to worry about when we're older.

Protein and movement belong together

Eating more protein isn't the whole answer.

Muscle needs a reason to stay.

Strength and resistance exercise provide that stimulus, while adequate protein provides the amino acids needed to support repair and maintenance.

You don't need to become a bodybuilder.

Weights, resistance bands and appropriately challenging body-weight exercises can all form part of maintaining strength as we age.

The important thing is doing it consistently.

Start with your plate

Before counting every gram, have a look at what you're actually eating.

Is there a good source of protein at breakfast?

What about lunch?

Does dinner contain protein along with vegetables, healthy fats and quality carbohydrates?

Are you eating enough overall?

For many people, improving protein intake isn't about completely changing their diet.

It's about noticing where the gaps are and making a few practical adjustments.
